Is Thailand set to become the hottest cannabis holiday destination in Asia? On 9th June 2022, the Thai narcotics board announced that the private recreational use of cannabis (tetrahydrocannabinol content under 0.2% by weight) was now legal in Thailand.
Cannabis infused food, beverages, beauty products, health products and wellness products are now also legal for manufacturing and consumption.
Thai Nationals are now also able to legally grow their own cannabis plants to sell and trade.
Thailand historically became the first Asian country to delist the use of cannabis. Thailand has previously been a cannabis trailblazer in Asia, allowing the use of cannabis for medical reasons since 2018.
The ‘health and wellness’ tourism has long been a lucrative market for Thailand In 2019 alone, it is estimated that 40 million tourists visited the kingdom purely for ‘health and wellness’ reasons. This industry has been estimated to be worth $2.5 billion annually.
With the delisting of cannabis in Thailand, the trend for ‘health and wellness’ and cannabis tourism has been forecasted to reinvigorate the tourism industry post-covid.
